ABOUT Your Curlfriend

Hey! I'm Jess, Your Curlfriend!

Hear from me when I was freshly 20 about the purpose of this blog.  At 27 the message still rings true, even if the verbiage is a little cringe for me now.

Welcome to my baby! A creation of love with a mixture of boredom, but weren't most of us created like this right?  Your Curlfriend was birthed within my dorm room at the Illustrious Tennessee State University.  I had recently turned the fabulous age of 20 and among the birthday wishes I received many noted I had a sense of style and I was their version of "hair goals".  I had self proclaimed myself "Your Curlfriend" on my Instagram page as a cute nickname.  When I started getting called this on campus I instantly felt like I had the juice lol.  So I created Your Curlfriend as an outlet for me to express myself and the various areas of my life that I feel most don't see, solely because I never had a premise to express these elements of myself.

I think it should be noted that I do not view myself as "goals" or one anyone should try to aspire to be.  One day I want to be on my Michelle Obama status and have little girls look up to me, but currently I'm just Jess. I'm growing everyday and just trying to get my life together- to a space where I would be proud to inspire others , but even beyond that inspire change.

When I started Your Curlfriend I had no idea what to write about.  Hair?  Style? I was lost.  I took advice from a beloved friend and just started writing about my everyday life.  Your Curlfriend transformed from failed hair tutorials to testimonies about losing my virginity, battling whether I want to be a doctor or an author and all things I experience as I travel in life.  I am proud of Your Curlfriend's growth.  She reflects my growth.  I am transparent and open for anyone who needs it.  God blesses me tremendously.  His blessings are meant to be shared and I do so through my pieces, learn from me, learn with me.  Travel this journey with me.

Essentially Your Curlfriend is all things me.  The Black Girl Survival Guide to College, The Indecisive Hairstyle Guide, The Failed Hairstyles (I hope they work better for you), The Lover Scorned, The Radical Girl in Africana Studies, The Overdresser, its just me.  I wanna take you on a ride and I just hope you stay on and enjoy. Grow and glow and above all spread love!
